When most people think of vacuum cleaners, the first brands that come to mind tend to be Dyson or Shark. But there was one vacuum cleaner that blew our minds this year, and it wasn’t from either of those companies. It was the Dreame vacuum cleaner, specifically the R20.
This is one of the best cordless vacuum cleaners we’ve ever tested, easily rivaling other well-known brands, and for a much lower price. We gave it a near-perfect 4.5 stars in our Dreame R20 vacuum cleaner review.
Its design, features, and spec list are impressive: it’s super lightweight (thanks to an innovative carbon fiber tube), you get a soft floor head designed for delicate floors, and it can automatically adjust the suction power based on the level of dirt – with information provided via a high-tech screen.
These features aren’t often seen in affordable vacuum cleaners, let alone in one vacuum cleaner that has all of them at once.
As for the price, the R20 lists for $449.99/£279, but discounts are common, so it’s unlikely you’ll actually have to pay that price.
Specs aren’t everything, though, so what about performance? The Dreame vacuum’s cleaning prowess blew our tester away, who commented that its suction power was “excellent for its compact size.”
In fact, it was a bit too powerful for some thicker carpets—thankfully, the Dreame has an air intake slider that can be opened to reduce drag, making it easier to push, with no noticeable drop in cleaning power.
The auto-adjust feature worked exactly as advertised, meaning the vacuum cleaned up spills with little effort.
Our reviewer was equally impressed with its maneuverability; the swiveling floor head made it easy to get around chair legs and into tight corners, and the flexible hose attachment helped with versatility, such as for cleaning under furniture and beds.
Perhaps the toughest test for a vacuum cleaner is pet hair, but once again the Dreame R20 rose to the challenge, sucking up nearly all of the hair from our multi-pet-owning tester’s carpet in one go. (We rated it one of the best pet hair vacuums we’ve tested.)
It’s not perfect. There’s a slightly annoying whining sound when it’s working (in any mode), and it’s easy to accidentally trigger the trigger when carrying the vacuum.
Finally, the dust bin is relatively small, so if you have a large house, you may find yourself emptying it frequently, which can be annoying. But other than that, it’s a very well-rounded vacuum.
In fact, Dreame is one of the brands to watch in the home appliance space. In addition to vacuums, the brand also makes robot vacuums, hair dryers, hair stylers, wet and dry vacuums, and most recently, a lawn robot. We tested products in each category and were very impressed overall.
