As part of the Ministry of Justice’s HMP Academy programme, SBFM has opened a cleaning training academy at HM Prison Wealstun, further extending its commitment to providing sustainable employment opportunities for ex-offenders.
Following an initial tender in early 2023 and a comprehensive onboarding process, SBFM has become the only successful agency to join the HMP Academy programme and has been awarded a three-year contract with an option to renew for a further two years. SBFM will train nine cohorts of trainees each year through the academy.
Wealstun Prison is a Category C men’s prison in West Yorkshire, housing approximately 800 prisoners.
SBFM was responsible for the design and fit-out of the interactive workshop. The space contains mock-ups of several specialist spaces, including bathroom facilities, hotel rooms, warehouses, corporate environments, retail areas and cinema spaces. Each environment is equipped with natural flooring, from carpets to hard smooth surfaces, to support training.
SBFM worked closely with Wealstun Prison (HMP Wealstun) and the British Institute of Cleaning Sciences (BICSc) to develop the two-week training programme for prisoners who are about to be released three months later. As a BICSc accredited training provider, SBFM ensures all participants gain industry recognised qualifications prior to release.
In addition to technical cleaning skills, the programme also provides support in English, maths and communication skills, depending on the initial level of the new recruit. The Academy also incorporates a practical job search element, including CV writing sessions and interview skills training.
After each course, SBFM opens up job opportunities, the recruitment team conducts formal interviews and all successfully selected trainees are offered employment. SBFM has achieved its target of achieving 30% employment for trainees within the next three years.
SBFM founder Colin Shute said: “This workshop is an important milestone in our commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for those who need a second chance.
Through our partnership with Wilston Prison, we have expanded the Evolve programme to not only teach cleaning skills, but also rebuild their lives and create safer communities by reducing reoffending rates.”
