The Shark Cordless Detect Pro Vacuum Cleaner is a Lightweight Wonder

by BERG

When it comes to cordless upright vacuums, my needs are relatively simple. Good suction power and decent battery life are usually enough to get the job done. While I mean no disrespect to my current upright vacuum, the Shark Cordless Detect Pro has far exceeded my expectations. With its auto-emptying mechanism, lightweight design, and auto-sensing technology, Shark’s latest pro-grade product is absolutely amazing to use on a variety of surfaces around the home.

The Shark Cordless Detect Pro vacuum is as heavy as a full-sized modular upright vacuum. While the entire unit (including the vacuum and the auto-emptying head) is about 7-8 parts, it can be easily assembled with just a few clicks. The vacuum’s suction head and nozzle are detachable and located behind the vacuum’s stand, and it comes with a handle that makes it easy for users to carry the vacuum over to empty the bin.

Thankfully, it doesn’t require a dust bag to be replaced and comes with a deodorizing technology canister if you’re placing it near residential or densely populated areas. While it has enough capacity to hold about 30 days of dust, it’s still a great choice because my two dogs make me tire of emptying the vacuum every other day or so. It also comes with a crevice nozzle and a pet multi-tool brush that can be attached to the side of the nozzle, which is a really nice touch.

There’s a clear, easy-to-read display on the top, as well as two buttons. The power button turns the vacuum on and off, while the auxiliary fan button allows the user to switch between different suction levels. Above the buttons is a battery bar, as well as an indicator light that switches between red and blue. Red means the area of the floor in front of you is dirty, while blue means you’ve already cleaned that area.

Much of the experience is thanks to the vacuum’s auto-sensing technologies, including DirtDetect, FloorDetect, LightDetect, and EdgeDetect. These technologies help you clean a variety of areas and floor types more efficiently and consistently without you having to touch anything.

That said, it has three suction modes to choose from, which are great for getting tiny stains out of carpets or cleaning up messes like flour or sugar. The sensor light above the vacuum head even senses when you’re vacuuming against a wall and only lights up the side that’s against the wall, which is a cool feature for sure.

It even does a good job of picking up large pieces of dust and debris, and it easily sucked up my golden retriever’s hairballs. Even better, the Shark Cordless Detect Pro vacuum lasts about 60 minutes in eco mode and about 40 minutes in auto mode. The auto mode is also a little hard to tell depending on the floor, and my carpet is thicker so it agitates a little louder and drains a little faster than the recommended 40 minutes.

I love the ease of use of the automatic emptying station. Just place the vacuum on the stand and you’re ready to go. I can forgive the smaller dust bin because the process is almost instantaneous, making it easy to use again or continue. It even acts as a charger while it’s sitting, meaning you never have to fiddle with it again once you’ve set it up.

There are a few minor quibbles here, though. First, because there’s a flexible hose running down the center of the vacuum, the shaft can bend, but not as much as you might think. This means you’ll either have to bend over or reach around or over some high places for a more thorough clean.

Second, because the vacuum head can be locked into a flat position when not in use, it can also lock if you hold it too close to your body while vacuuming. This means you’ll have to use your feet to get it back into place because it’s so stiff. Overall, it’s not a noticeable issue, but it still needs to be mentioned.

Overall, the Shark Cordless Detect Pro vacuum is lightweight, versatile, powerful, and easy to use on a variety of surfaces. Its auto-sensing technology means you don’t have to worry about whether you’re getting the right suction power, and the auto-emptying feature makes up for the smaller dustbin, which holds up to 30 days of dust and debris.

While it’s not as flexible for cleaning in low spots and around high areas, it’s definitely not distracting, making it one of the best options on the market at this price point.
