I’m always trying to find a balance between natural cleaning products and those that actually work. Sometimes lemon cleaning just doesn’t work, and you have to use commercial cleaning sprays—but I’m always trying to replace them as much as possible. I recently switched to a natural toilet bowl cleaning product, and spoiler alert: it works just as well as the weird-smelling bleach I used to use.
I used to use vinegar to remove stains from clothing and clean stainless steel appliances, but never used it to clean the bathroom, mainly because I wasn’t sure this natural method would kill bacteria. Then I learned that vinegar contains acetic acid, which does kill bacteria, so I decided to give it a try.
I grabbed another jug of cleaning vinegar, poured a little into the toilet, and let it sit for about five minutes before I started scrubbing. (Full disclosure, I hadn’t cleaned my bathroom in weeks, and the inside of the toilet was starting to show noticeable stains.) A quick scrub with a toilet brush and the stain was gone completely. The verdict? This method worked just as well as the gooey blue gel cleaner I used to use.
Not only is vinegar a natural cleaning method, it’s also cheaper than traditional toilet bowl cleaners. I bought a 64 oz can of cleaning vinegar for $2.48. I use about a cup of vinegar each time I clean my toilet, so about 8 times for less than $3.
If you’re not used to cleaning with vinegar, don’t be scared by the smell. While my bathroom does smell a bit like vinegar for about 5-10 minutes, I find it much nicer than bleach and safer for kids and pets!
