A pressure washer is a practical and reassuring tool to have around the house. It can remove years of accumulated dirt, dust, mold, and even stubborn stains, and can make dirty, dull surfaces look like new in just minutes.
But before you pull the trigger, know that not all messes can handle a strong stream of water. It’s crucial to know which surfaces are suitable for pressure washing. It’s also important to use the right PSI (pounds per square inch) setting so you can adjust the pressure accordingly. Learn which surfaces are suitable for pressure washing this summer, as well as some practical tips to make sure you do it right.
1. Concrete surfaces
Concrete is a durable material that is perfect for pressure washing. Whether you’re dealing with a driveway, sidewalk, patio, or garage floor, concrete can generally handle high pressure without any problems. Pressure washing is especially effective for removing stubborn stains such as motor oil, mold, algae, and built-up dirt.
Using a surface cleaning attachment when cleaning concrete surfaces can help keep pressure even across the area and reduce the likelihood of streaking. For tougher stains, using a concrete cleaner beforehand can make the cleaning process easier.
Keep in mind that newer concrete (i.e., concrete that’s less than a year old) may still be curing and more susceptible to damage. It’s best to wait a while before using a pressure washer to clean these concrete surfaces.
2. Vinyl Siding

To safely clean brick surfaces, use a lower pressure setting and a fan nozzle. Before cleaning, inspect the area for any cracks or damage and repair as needed. After cleaning, it is recommended to apply a waterproof sealant to protect your brick walls from future wear and tear.
4. Pavers and Flagstones
Pavers and natural stone pavements are ideal for pressure washing. Over time, moss, algae, and dirt can build up, making these surfaces slippery. When pressure washing, use a medium pressure setting and keep a constant distance from the pavement.
Be careful not to disturb the sand between pavers, as this can damage the mortar joints, just like with brick walls and sidewalks. After cleaning, you may need to re-sand the joints or apply a sealant to keep the surface looking new and prevent weeds from growing.
5. Wooden Decks and Fences
Compared to the above materials, wood is softer and more likely to chip if the pressure setting on your pressure washer is too high. When cleaning wooden decks and fences, use low pressure and a fan nozzle for best results. Be sure to wash with the grain of the wood and keep the nozzle moving to avoid leaving noticeable scratches. After pressure washing, you may want to sand down any rough spots and apply a sealer or stain to protect the wood from weathering.
6. Outdoor Furniture
Plastic, metal, and resin outdoor furniture are great for pressure washing because they can withstand strong water jets and come out clean. Don’t forget to remove any cushions, pillows, or any pieces with fabric before you start.
If your furniture has delicate details, such as wicker weaving, use a lower pressure setting and keep a wide distance from the surface. Adding a mild detergent designed for pressure washers can also help remove stubborn dirt, oil stains, and even mold.
7. Trash Cans and Lawn Equipment
Trash cans, recycling bins, lawn tools, and wheelbarrows can all benefit from a thorough pressure wash. Over time, these items can accumulate dirt, debris, grime, and odors. You can use higher pressure and a smaller spray angle to get them looking and smelling like new. However, when cleaning your tools, be sure to remove or carefully protect any electrical parts, such as those on a lawn mower, before you begin pressure washing.
8. Grills
If you use your outdoor grill regularly, grease and grime will eventually build up on it. While it’s possible to clean it with a pressure washer, you’ll need to take precautions. Disconnect the propane tank or power source and make sure the grill is completely cool before starting the machine.
