My favorite part of spring cleaning is outdoor spring cleaning. After a long winter indoors, it feels so good to get outside, enjoy the sunshine, and get ready for the next few days of cleaning in the yard.
Ever since my dad introduced me to Wet & Forget spray, available at Walmart, cleaning algae and moss from my patio has been a breeze. It cleans patio pavers in less than half an hour without a pressure washer and provides months of protection against algae and moss.
Cleaning a patio is usually a fair bit of manual labor, and keeping everything looking its best can be a lot of manual labor. So I’m always on the lookout for tools and products that can make outdoor spring cleaning less labor intensive while still making sure it’s effective.
Wet & Forget is a cleaning solution that penetrates outdoor surfaces and kills mold, moss, and algae without scrubbing. Just spray it on and forget it while the cleaning solution does all the work for you. It’s my go-to cleaning hack.
You have to trust this backyard cleaning trick to work. You won’t see any changes right away. Instead, you have to let the spray sit and work over the next few weeks and months. It will slowly kill the algae and moss while forming a protective film to prevent them from returning quickly.
Cleaning your patio with Wet & Forget is easy, and all you need are a few simple tools:
A stiff-bristled broom, available at Walmart, to sweep away debris.
Wet & Forget Outdoor Spray, available at The Home Depot.
If your Wet & Forget isn’t ready to use, use pure water.
Optional: If your solution doesn’t come with a spray pump, you can buy an easy-to-carry garden sprayer and pump from Walmart.
Optional: A helper to help you carry any heavy patio furniture
People who have clean patios always sweep and clear the clutter on a regular basis. However, if you’re like me, you usually neglect this task in the winter, so by spring, my patio is always buried in leaves.
Before using Wet & Forget, first clear all the clutter. I use a sturdy outdoor broom and a dustpan to make sure I sweep up any debris in the corners and to ensure a clean surface when I spray.
Wet & Forget can be used to clean outdoor furniture to help kill moss and remove algae stains, but it’s best to move it all out of the way when you’re cleaning your patio to get a clean surface to work on.
You should always try to avoid moving heavy furniture on your own and get help from friends, family, or neighbors whenever possible to avoid hurting yourself or damaging anything.
If you’re working alone, consider using furniture casters from Amazon to make it easier to move heavy items while you work.
I prefer using a product like Wet & Forget to clean my patio rather than a pressure washer for a few reasons. First, it reduces my water and electricity usage, which helps keep my home energy bills down. Second, it makes it easier to avoid patio cleaning mistakes, such as damaging or cracking the stone.
I spray left and right on my patio, using the nozzle to apply the liquid to each tile and paying special attention to the gaps between tiles that are filled with moss. I usually work in the evening after the sun goes down so the spray doesn’t evaporate too quickly.
It’s also crucial to work on a rain-free day for at least five hours so the spray can do its job and not be diluted and washed away.
While it takes a few weeks to kill the moss and algae, it also protects against it returning for several months. I usually spray again in the fall.
